Position Description Manages a unit within a department. Plans, organizes and develops goals and procedures for the unit. Represents the unit to administrators, outside agencies and others on relevant matters. Supervises subordinate staff.
Major/Essential Functions The Cotton Phenomics Laboratory within the Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute at Texas Tech University invites applications for available Unit Manager Position. The qualified candidate will manage the laboratory, plan, organize and develop goals and procedures for the unit. The manager will supervise subordinate staff and communicate with customers and outside agencies.
Additional duties include:
Oversee the maintenance of laboratory instruments.
Forward data and information to appropriate parties.
Practice and enforce employee safety.
Interact with other laboratory managers and researchers to plan and execute their testing needs.
Communicate with the Lead Account Processor to ensure timely set-up of projects and billing of clientele.
Answer client's questions on testing done, procedures used, and interpretation of tests results.
Assist Associate Director in data analysis and reporting for research projects.
Interact with instrument manufacturing and service companies to stay current regarding new developments.
Management of employees to ensure that correct test methods, procedures and standards are practiced and maintained.
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree plus three years supervisory experience; OR a combination of education and/or supervisory experience to equal seven years.
Preferred Qualifications Qualified applicants should have experience in managing personnel and good communication skills (both verbal and written). Masters degree is preferred. Applicants should have an in-depth knowledge of the maintenance of High Volume Instruments and Advance Fiber Information Systems. Good knowledge of the maintenance of yarn testing equipment. In-depth knowledge of ASTM and AATCC procedures for testing of fibers, yarns, and fabrics. Ability and willingness to schedule and organize effectively, train and supervise employees, interact effectively with the public, and learn about new instruments and procedures.
