Department Grounds Maintenance

Position Description Performs manual work in the operation of heavy, medium, and light mobile equipment, and the maintenance of all such equipment pertaining to assigned area.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Operates and services all types of grounds maintenance equipment.

  • Maintains all aspects of grounds, including turf, fences, walkways, ground cover, paved streets, parking lots, signage and planting.

  • Advises foreman of project status and operational problems.

  • Load and move dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials, using trucks, crawler tractors, power cranes, shovels, graders, or related equipment.

  • Start engines, move throttles, switches, or levers, or depress pedals to operate machines, such as bulldozers, trench excavators, road graders, or backhoes.

  • Utilize proper safety equipment and techniques to prevent personal injury and property damage and complies with the grounds maintenance safety program to include all safety and health rules, regulations and operating policies and procedures.

  • Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established Environmental Health & Safety, and departmental policies and procedures using Proper Protective equipment.

  • Observe entire grounds and identify and document all problems and/or hazards. Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions.

  • Drive,maneuver and service equipment equipped with blades in successive passes over working areas to remove topsoil, vegetation, or rocks or to distribute and level earth or terrain.

  • Eliminates hazards or potential hazards to human life and or property.

  • This is an essential personnel position. You will need to be available for on call duty for emergency maintenance or to assist in campus preparation due to inclement weather or hazardous weather conditions.

  • Performs related work as instructed by supervisory persons.

Occasional Duties

  • On call for emergency maintenance or to assist in campus preparation in inclement weather or hazardous weather conditions.

Required Qualifications 8th grade education or equivalent plus two years related experience in the operation of medium mobile equipment. Commercial drivers license or willingness to obtain such a license. Additional job related experience may substitute on a year-by-year basis for required education as long as applicant possesses desired reading and writing skills.

Applicants for this Security Sensitive Level II position will be subject to a criminal background check and must pass a drug and alcohol test after a conditional offer of employment has been extended, but before employment can be confirmed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Commercial driver's license preferred, and must be able to obtain CDL within time limitation.

Pay Statement Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as, the institutional pay plan. For additional information, please reference the institutional pay plan on the Human Resources webpage.
