Position Description Reviews official medical records with physician/healthcare provider documentation and assigns appropriate codes for all physician/healthcare provider services from current editions of official coding sources. Ensures accurate, complete, and timely code assignments for all physician/healthcare providers.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Knowledge of the CPT, ICD-CM, and HCPCS nomenclature, coding rules and guidelines.

  • Knowledge of inpatient and outpatient medical records processing and federal and state reimbursement regulations.

  • Verifies insurance benefits and eligibility for claims.

  • Communicates with all insurance payers.

  • Compiles all necessary billing documentation for processing that includes consults, peri-ops, operative reports, office notes and billing claim forms.

  • Enters charge corrections for denied claims.

  • Codes procedures and surgeries.

  • Codes E/M and office charges maintaining a system to track completion.

  • Codes pre-certs for surgeries and diagnostic procedures

  • Attends CEU and conferences to maintain coding knowledge.

  • Provides coverage in co workers absence.

Occasional Duties

  • Other duties and report requests as assigned by supervisors.

Required Qualifications A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent plus at least two (2) years of coding and reimbursement experience that includes procedural and diagnosis coding.


A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent plus successful completion of a recognized procedural and diagnosis coding course.

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or desire to become certified.

Previous coding and reimbursement experience that includes procedural and diagnosis coding.
