Position Description Prepares, examines, and analyzes chromosomes found in biological specimens such as amniotic fluids, bone marrow, and blood, to aid in diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases. Will also perform advanced technical duties in the diagnostic study of cells for the purpose of recognition and classification.

Assists in the training of subordinate personnel. Prepares and interprets reports, records, forms and other correspondence.

Major/Essential Functions Summarize results of comprehensive chromosome analysis, and generate both normal and abnormal reports with correct standardized definitions and terminology for cytogenetic variants. Prepare and interpret reports, records, and forms for the purpose of communicating results of recognition and classification findings with medical professionals. Assist in the training of junior personnel.

Required Qualifications Education:

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree from with a major in Biology, Microbiology or related field.


A minimum of one year of laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications All candidates must have the following:

  • Minimum of one year experience require, must be in a cytogenetic lab or similar environment and must include one year of karyotyping experience.

  • Knowledge of molecular genetic techniques with clinical correlation

  • Knowledge of chromosome structure, function, morphology and behavior

  • A completed and clean criminal background check

All candidates must have ability to:

  • Perform analysis and karyotyping of chromosome metaphase spreads.

  • Ability to receive the American Society of Clinical Pathologist certification within one year of employment

Minimum Hire Rate 19.53

Pay Statement Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as, the institutional pay plan. For additional information, please reference the institutional pay plan on the Human Resources webpage.
